Gamification in Employee Engagement and Training in Sri Lanka
Introduction
Almost all business organizations are currently facing intense competition. As a result, organizations are adopting innovative methods to improve collaboration and training results among their employees. One such method is called Gamification. Through this approach, game strategies are integrated into employee learning, thereby increasing motivation. It is designed to enhance productivity, and there is a growing tendency to use it in Sri Lanka today.
What is Gamification?
Gamification is the application of game -like features such as points, rewards, challenges, leaderboards, or levels in non-game contexts such as workplace design, to increase individual motivation, improve learning outcomes and enhance training through fun and engaging activities.
Gamification is transforming employee engagement and training in Sri Lanka, emerging as a powerful game-changer for HR
Here’s how gamification is transforming employee engagement and training in Sri Lanka, making it a revolutionary tool for HR.
Boosting Employee Engagement through Gamified Learning
One key reason gamification is used for employee training in organizations is its alignment with natural human behaviors such as competition, the desire to win, and social interaction. This approach is used to foster engagement and collaboration in employee training programs in Sri Lanka. For example, Dialog Axiata’s use of gamification to help employees master new skills by incorporating features such as points and badges earned by employees can be cited as a practical example of using gamification in Sri Lanka. This approach has increased engagement by motivating employees to complete training modules and outperform their peers, resulting in improved customer service across the board (Hamari, Koivisto, & Sarsa, 2014.Studies on gamification also demonstrate that it increases employee engagement in terms of both time and frequency, leading to better results and higher satisfaction.
Improving Skill Retention and Practical Knowledge Application
For various reasons, traditional training methods often struggle to engage employees long-term. However, gamification addresses this challenge by presenting information in interactive and digestible formats, helping employees retain what they have learned. For instance, Sri Lanka's largest garment manufacturer MAS Holdings, uses gamification to integrate employees at different levels.
Their gamified platform employs scenario-based training modules, helping employees learn through practice and immediate feedback. Employees can revisit modules and earn points for successfully applying their knowledge, which improves their understanding of complex tasks (Zichermann & Cunningham, 2011).
Promoting a Culture of Ongoing Learning and Growth
Maintaining a continuous learning culture is crucial in modern workplaces, especially as regulations and technology evolve rapidly. Gamification supports the development of such a culture in constantly changing organizations. For example, institutions such as banks, where technology and regulations frequently update use gamified platforms. The Commercial Bank of Ceylon has developed a platform where employees participate in quizzes, earn badges, and track their progress on leaderboards. This competitive and fun environment encourages employees to return to the platform regularly to refresh their knowledge and acquire new skills (Suh & Wagner, 2017).
Improving Team Collaboration and Workplace Dynamics
Why Gamification Matters for Sri Lanka’s Workforce
Conclusion
Gamification is an excellent method for increasing employee engagement and improving training. Leading Sri Lankan companies such as Dialog Axiata, MAS Holdings, Commercial Bank, and John Keells Holdings have embraced gamification to great effect. These organizations demonstrate how gamified learning can boost employee motivation, enhance retention, and foster teamwork. By implementing gamified training systems, Sri Lankan companies can cultivate workplaces that prioritize growth, innovation, and a clear sense of purpose.
