This shift is reshaping the Human Resource Management (HRM) landscape in the country.

The Rise of Social Media in Recruitment

Globally, platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter have become invaluable tools for recruitment. According to a Jobvite report, approximately 92% of recruiters use social media to find potential candidates (Jobvite, 2022). This trend is catching on in Sri Lanka as well. With the number of internet users in Sri Lanka reaching around 34 million in 2022 (Statista, 2022), businesses are increasingly recognizing the potential of these platforms to reach a broader, more diverse audience. According to the Society for Human Resource Management, 84% of organizations now use social media in their recruiting process to attract passive job seekers, those not actively looking for new roles but open to opportunities (SHRM, 2023).

Recruitment success varies by platform. For instance, LinkedIn leads with 50% of successful hires, followed by Facebook and Instagram. The chart below illustrates these differences:

The chart highlights LinkedIn’s effectiveness for professional roles, while Facebook and Instagram are better suited for informal or creative positions.

Benefits of Leveraging Social Media in Modern Recruitment

Wider Reach

Announcing job opportunities on social media enables companies to attract a large pool of candidates, connecting with individuals from various backgrounds, cultures, and skill levels. Each platform appeals to different demographics, offering employers a targeted yet expansive reach.

Real-Time Interaction

Social media provides a convenient platform for companies to attract job seekers quickly and easily. LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram allow businesses to showcase their culture and values, building trust with candidates through instant, digital communication. This approach enables companies to compete effectively for top talent and leave a positive impression.

Cost-Effective

Compared to traditional methods like job boards or newspaper advertisements, social media can be a low-cost recruitment option. Many platforms allow free or affordable job postings, which is particularly beneficial for small-scale traders and businesses in Sri Lanka. According to Hootsuite’s 2023 Digital Trends report, 51% of businesses cited social media recruitment as their primary method for reaching millennial and Gen Z candidates (Hootsuite, 2023).

Strengthened Company Image

Social media greatly supports employer branding by enabling companies to highlight their culture, values, and workplace environment. In Sri Lanka, where cultural fit is critical, a well-crafted social media presence can positively influence a candidate’s choice to apply. Companies can also showcase social initiatives, further enhancing their public image and appeal.

Barriers to Effective Social Media Recruitment

Here are some of the key barriers that can hinder effective social media recruitment;

Data Privacy Concerns

Candidates may hesitate to share personal information on these platforms, fearing potential misuse or privacy risks.

Cyber security Risks

Engaging candidates on social media can expose both parties to cyber security threats like phishing scams or fraud, which may deter some candidates from interacting with organizations online.

Reputation Management

Negative feedback or comments on social media can spread quickly, potentially damaging a company’s reputation.

Limited Candidate Pool

In Sri Lanka, while younger generations are highly engaged on social media, older professionals may still prefer traditional methods.

Conclusion

Social media has revolutionized recruitment, bridging the gap between candidates and employers through direct, engaging communication. Despite challenges like data privacy concerns, reputational risks and cybersecurity threats, the benefits of social media such as broader reach and cost efficiency make it a valuable tool for recruitment. By effectively leveraging these platforms, Sri Lankan organizations can develop a robust recruitment strategy that appeals to diverse demographics, strengthens employer branding, and aligns with modern HRM trends.

Choosing the best applicant from a very competitive job market is a prevalent and efficient strategy. Social media channels give organizations a broad avenue to match the right candidate with the right position. Both funds and time will be saved. However, there is a price with such actions. Employee data, organizational data, company profile image, and employee attrition are all at high risk. Employees of the company are also given access to a broad perspective of the employment market with numerous options through social media. As a result, the organization will experience collateral costs regarding employee retention. Interesting and relatable information. Good work again.
